July 2009

I’m sure that much of the legislation dreamed up in Washington DC is well meaning and intended to do good for us citizens. Regardless of how well meaning and intentioned the laws are, many (if not most) of these laws fall prey to The Laws of Unintended Consequences (TLUC.) We have laws that were passed that were supposed to help people but end up causing misery or headaches. We have laws that were supposed to save money when enacted years ago, yet they now cost us plenty — without questioning or revision by legislators.

See, once a law is on the books, it is rarely revisited for efficacy or reviewed for cost-effectiveness. Also, with the exception of tax cuts, laws are rarely time limited. In fact, I can’t think of a single spending program that has time limits attached to it.

Two examples of government programs created by well-intended legislation are Social Security and Medicare. But they are programs without end. They are programs that are failing. They are, I declare, the government’s “Big Lies!”

Right now Social Security has an unfunded liability is $17.5 trillion, in perpetuity, and that of Medicare is over $74 trillion, for a combined total of over $100 trillion. These are big numbers indeed, and I agree that they are unsustainable. To give you an idea of how big these number are, the nation’s total private net worth is estimated to be $52 trillion. As it stands, the unfunded portions of Social Security and Medicare are approximately twice the private net worth of the citizens who fund it via taxes! These aren’t so much programs as they are the most enormous Ponzi schemes in the history of the world.

So, how does the government intend to “fix” the Medicare shortfall? President Obama and the Democratically-controlled Congress would like to put in place a system of socialized medicine. They would like to model a new, Byzantine system on that of the UK or Canada. They tout that this highly-regulated system would reduce costs over time (except, according to the non-partisan CBO their plans don’t!) and make the medical care experience more efficient and patient-centric.

Except they leave out a salient detail: costs are to be saved predicated on services that are not delivered. What does this mean? It means that panels of medical “experts” will sift and sort through treatments and determine which are the most effective and which may be prescribed by your physician. If a treatment for you, at your age, isn’t determined to be efficacious, then you will not get the treatment. Simple as that. You might grow sicker, suffer and die, but costs will be contained!

Nice plan, huh?

There are so many other problems with the health care “reforms” currently under consideration in the Congress that are worthy of concern and consternation by individual Americans…do the research for yourself. In essence what the President and the Congress are attempting to do is change the paradigm of the entire health care industry (which is approximately 12% of our economy to help clean up mess created by TLUC. So rather than revisit Medicare and/or Social Security, and make honest, sweeping and painful changes to these programs, it is preferred that the entire American populace will be subjected to new and highly restrictive health care rules.

Remember, misery loves company!

It is the general belief of our political betters that not only wealth must be shared, but so must pain be shared as well. Heck, this is America…isn’t that the American way?

Uh, NO!!

We are all bound together by our Constitutional responsibilities. We are not yoked together by the oppressive caprice of our ersatz “representatives,” who care more about their prospective re-elections and pandering to wealthy special interests — whether they want us to believe we are or not.

We can act like our wallets are bigger than our hearts. We can enact sweeping social programs that will eventually enslave us all with taxes and ensnare us all in their inadequate services. Reality says our generosity must be bound by the wealth and resources that are available. If we wish exorbitant taxes and lousy programs that simply do not deliver the services that they promised, then let’s keep on traveling down the road that we are on, and have been for the last 70 years or so. I’m convinced that this road will lead us straight to Hell!

Because we can legislate only so many things, but they are dictated by reality and common sense, and we can never legislate or predict the final outcome or destination.

No matter how much we wish or how big our hearts are…

The American people didn’t elect a president last Nov. 4th. Nosiree, they chose an American Idol winner…or, as I postulate…they bought the current version of the latest fad.

That’s right, American voters elected a human Hula Hoop!

Hear me out on this — Obama was a first term US senator from Illinois who had precious little experience in either the public or the private sector, and he never managed people or personnel beyond being a “community organizer.” That’s all fine and good as experience for the manager of a 7-11 or the local hardware store. But Obama’s experience never qualified him as a serious presidential candidate. No way…no how…no where!

But Obama had something that many unsuccessful political candidates never had, a high-octane political marketing machine. As a result, he was less of a candidate and more of a fad. It was Obama here, Obama there — Obama everywhere! But the selling of Obama to the American voter didn’t require much heavy lifting on his part. It was pretty much a foregone conclusion that he was going to get the preponderance of the black vote as well as the liberal white vote. So, his political marketeers only had to set their sites on winning a small segment of the moderate Democratic and Independent voters. They had to focus like a laser on these voters and convince them to buy the fad.

A splash “Hope” and a dash of “Change”, and the rest was history.

The American people were now the proud owners of a fad — think Pet Rock, mood ring, Frisbee, Furby, Troll doll, Slinky, GI Joe, Chia Pet or Hula Hoop. The only difference is that when folks grow tired of their inanimate fad, they could simply chuck it or put it away for nostalgia’s sake. Once the bloom left the fad rose, they were free to fall victim to gravitational pull of the next fad.

However, on Nov. 4th, 2008, we placed Obama in the most powerful political seat in the nation. We put the pen to sign sweeping and outrageous legislation into law into his hand, we placed him at the bully pulpit and we gave him free rein to set the direction of our country and influence it for many years to come. When we grow tired of his plans and policies, there’s no putting him in the closet in the den until November 2012. No, just like a presidential Energizer Bunny he will just keep doing what he’s doing until his term ends (hopefully) in three and a half years, or God forbid, in seven and a half years should we succumb as a nation to secondary fad worship in the next presidential election. Our displeasure may result in lower polling numbers for him, but until the next election…he’s in charge no matter what.

Yes, elections DO have consequences. Even if the human embodiment of the Hula Hoops has won the presidency. And we are living through the residue of these consequences with TARPs, stimuli, cap-and-trade, health care “reform”, trillion dollar budgets, and racial brouhahas (including insulting the Cambridge, Massachusetts police department.)

When you tire of these antics and policies, then remember to spin your hips round and round with your Wham-O Hula Hoop! Because you bought the fad…now you’re going to have to live with the consequences for at least another 1150 days.

Did you know that the UK NHS (National Health System) is the largest employer in the EU?

It is, employing 1.5 million people, and according to WikiAnswers.com “…only the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, the Wal-Mart supermarket chain and the Indian Railways directly employ more people.”

The next time that Obama or a liberal Democrat tries to tell you that socialized medicine will be cheaper than our present system, please share this interesting fact with them.

Yes indeed, the stimulus is full of baloney or some other processed luncheon meat. And in some cases, it’s full of very expensive processed cheese.

Two Pounds Sliced, Frozen Ham: $1.2 million
Mozzarella Cheese: $1.56 million
Processed Cheese: $5.7 million

So much for shovel-ready projects. Maybe they meant slice-ready loafs!

All kidding aside, is this what the stimulus was really intended for? Do we want the equivalent of $300 hammers and $600 toilet seats that the government was (in)famous for in the past? I don’t think so.

And if you think that these three items are some freak…some aberration of the stimulus spending, then think again. There are literally hundreds of questionable expenditures that amount to over $100 million as of today. Perhaps you think that in light of a $787 billion dollar total expenditure that $100 million is mere chump change. However, I’m of the mind that the $100 million is significant and worthy of our concern and it’s apparent waste is worthy of our scorn.

Please, keep your eyes open. There are going to be plenty more opportunities and instances for the stimulus funds to be wasted, mishandled or misappropriated. And let’s not forget stolen too. But it’s YOUR money, so if I were you I’d watch this whole process like the money was coming directly from your wallet.

Because it probably is…

Don’t you get the feeling that something’s just a little fishy in Obama’s and the Democrat’s attempt to pass sweeping health care “reform?”

I mean the legislation under consideration is enormous (over 1,000 pages), ponderous to read and as an added bonus, the bureaucracies created are mind-boggling. But beyond the product of their furtive endeavors is the speed and secrecy with which this legislative process is being carried out.

The Congress is being prodded to come up with and act upon legislation that will affect nearly 12% of our GDP and 100% of our private lives in a little over a month’s time. And the players in the discussions and deliberations are acting in almost utter secrecy (although the draft of the legislative document is available for public review — I can tell you that it’s lively reading to be sure) — and they are revising and amending bills late at night or very early in the morning hours, under the cover of darkness.

And bipartisanship? Fughetaboutit! The Democrats are treating the process like the Congress represents a 100% Democratic constituency instead of the approximate 50-50 split in political ideology that constitutes America today.

If the Congress and Obama choose to continue with this “reform” process that the CBO states will cost more than the present “broken” system and that more than 50% of Americans are suspicious of and outright reject, then our representative form of government is irreparably broken. We’d be better off without a federal government and do quite well with 50 discrete state governments and our local governments.

Talk about your taxation (and forced participation) without representation! I know that as a Massachusetts resident that my political ideology has not been “represented” in my adult voting lifetime (over 30 years), and is unlikely to be represented for the foreseeable future. To me, that’s not democracy — it’s tyranny of the first order.

But I can live with the outcome if my “representatives” don’t get (a.) too crazy and (b.) too greedy.

The greed part is simply human nature, and it’s out of control. But it is in the longer term somewhat controllable by the vagaries of the economy, as we’re finding out now.

Unfortunately we’ve now gone beyond greedy and are now beginning to toe the crazy waters — with auto company bailouts, bank bailouts, stimuli that stimulate little or nothing except for special interests, climate change legislation and, finally, health care legislation. Simply put, we’re getting an abundance of crazy that we just can’t handle!

PLEASE, no more CRAZY!

The folks in Washington DC are doing too many things too quickly. They have a serious case of institutional ADHD! We cannot expect reasonable results from a government that is taking on so much of a load on its shoulders as quickly as it has. We can, however, expect crazy results…with the laws of unintended consequences weighing heavily on the outcomes of the legislative actions.

If you WANT crazy, then sit back and enjoy the ride. It will be fast, bumpy and DOWNWARD trending. And as I’ve stated many times previously, our children and all their heirs will end up paying for the mess that our generation has created.

However, if you care anything for your country and your neighbors, then I suggest that you make a few phone calls to your elected officials and let your voices be heard. A good place to start is at the White House [the switchboard is at (202) 456-1414], the House [the Office of the Clerk of the U.S. Capitol is (202) 225-7000], and the Senate [(202) 224-3121.]

I don’t know much about politicians except that they are all VOTE WHORES at their cores. When you call them, pro or con on an issue, they listen and they count. If enough of their constituency speaks up and lets them know how they feel, those motivated citizens can have a direct impact on how their representative ultimately votes.

Now is the time for us to SPEAK UP. Let our voices be heard, otherwise we can silently sit and watch OUR United States be ripped from our grasp and be fundamentally changed, forever.

With all the crazy proposals and legislation flying around Washington, I hope that my fellow American voters remember that although they may be powerless NOW to do anything to thwart these schemes, they can do a lot in the future.

Let the Democrats do everything that they wish to do. Chances are they’re not going to be stopped unless some serious thinking and patriotism prevails on the left side of the aisle. So, let them go!

But I think that we need to remind all those high-minded political leaders that they vote for this nonsense at their own peril. I know that just like Santa Claus I’ll be keeping a list of those individual reps and senators who vote for cap-and-tax and health care legislation. I’m even going to remember their votes on TARP, Stimulus and Obama’s “budget.”

Because during their next run for office, they’ve got some serious explaining to do. They’re going to have to justify their actions, including the fact that they DID NOT READ the stimulus legislation prior to their vote for it. Indeed, these partisan politicos will be reminded that actions DO have consequences! They simply can’t act like they are above it all and were only doing things for our best interests. They will have to explain why, in opposition to information available to the contrary, they chose to toe their party line.

These fools are acting like a greedy child during his first trip to a toy store. They want EVERYTHING and they want it NOW.

So, have it your way NOW. But enjoy the feeling, because just as I intend to make it one of my life’s passions to defeat these traitors to the Constitution, I’m convinced that there are hundreds of thousands or millions of others who feel the same way.

So politicians, represent us at your own political peril. I think that more than any time in US history, you will be held accountable for your actions and you will suffer the wrath of the very angry, silent majority.

And the United States of America will be so much better off from your “retirement!”

The proposed $1.5 trillion health care legislation in the House of Representatives will make health care a right and a responsibility for all Americans. But the question that comes to my mind is can Congress enumerate new “rights” that do not already exist in the Constitution?

I have two problems with this new enumeration of a Constitutional “right.”

The first problem that I have is that the Congress simply cannot wave a magic wand and give us new “rights”. The Constitution, as drafted by the Founders, enumerates our inherent rights and thus cannot be capriciously changed without consent of the people and the states via a Constitutional amendment. This action cannot be done by edict from the Congress. Simply put, our representatives are not our keepers! They are our elected representatives, and they must operate within the limits of their Constitutional authority. Granting new rights is not in their Constitutional bailiwick.

The second problem that I have is that by the government determining that a service (yes, health care is a service) is a right, and furthermore that the government is going to insinuate itself between the individual and this service — and new “right” — then there becomes a troubling new way that Congress may curry or even buy favor with its actions in this venue in the future.

He who controls your health (care) controls your vote!

This is a  nice try by an administration, a Congress and a government infrastructure that are obsessed with the notion of health care for all. Or more accurately put, a majority Democrat-controlled administration, Congress and government. They desperately want to pass health care “reform” as soon as possible. Why? Because the Democrat political leadership see the perfect alignment of forces (Democrat control of the White House, and both houses of the Congress) to get this done in a manner that is most palatable to their political platform and future goals. Hence, they must act expeditiously to literally force this legislation down the throats of a mostly uninformed electorate. Why? Because the devil is in the details and if the rank-and-file American public were to learn the details in this legislation, there would naturally be push back. The push back would be primarily from the cost and from the details of the implementation.

When a citizen is guaranteed something as a right, and it has an attendant cost associated with it, then the implementation of this right runs afoul of the Constitution. Rights are free concepts. They do not incur a cost to the individual, nor are they dictated by their representatives or government. Our rights are citizen-centric…they spring from the individual and they do not depend upon the interaction or intervention of another. By making this new “right” a responsibility, the Congress will have for the first time in American history made the average citizen beholding to the government for their existence. This concept is anti-constitutional and a tremendous intrusion into our personal liberty. Sure, it’s being done under the guise of helping us, but a person can be killed with kindness, you know. Who doesn’t want to be healthy? Who doesn’t want to live as long as they can? But the government has no place as the steward of our health. Our health and our personal lifestyle choices (which affect our health) are none of the government’s business!

As with all other government give away programs, this new right is merely a means to an end. By making health care a right and responsibility, the politicians who have crafted this legislation see it as an opportunity to gain political primacy by essentially buying votes. How better to curry the favor of the great unwashed masses than to give them guaranteed health care? By providing and controlling health care for the masses, our elected representatives rise from mere mortal staus to an almost godlike status. They will essentially assume the responsibility for the lives and deaths of individual American citizen. Or more aptly put, they may insinuate themselves into most decisions and actions that we make from the cradle to the grave. If this is not liberty blunted, then I don’t know what is!

It strikes me that the Founders never intended this function for our government. Otherwise they would have explicitly enumerated this government responsibility in the Constitution. To foist this expensive, expansive and intrusive “right” upon us citizens through an interpretation of the role of government in the Constitution is nothing less than a crime against us all.

So, count me in the group of citizens who think that an individual’s health care, although being a desirable necessity, is not a right. And it is certainly no place for the government to interfere — no way, no how.

Each time that the actions of my fellow man stuns and shocks me, I just have to say that “I’ve seen everything.” Well, the truly gruesome practices that went on for years at a greater Chicago cemetery make me feel that I have seen everything. This crime was a most heartless and callous act that was perpetrated on unwitting families of the interred.

The four people involved — the cemetery manager and three grave diggers conspired to resell graves at the historic black cemetery site. They would sell the grave site then disinter the body(ies) already present and discard them like debris, and then re-sell the grave site to another unwitting customer. In doing so, they would split the grave re-sale fee and not report the sale to the Arizona-based cemetery owners. In some cases, the four would simply tamp down body the current occupant of the grave site and then simply stack the newly interred over the first remains.

This practice went on for years!

Law enforcement officials estimate that as many as 300 graves have been affected by this re-burial scheme, but the number may rise as more bodies are discovered on the cemetery property. Making things harder is the fact that cemetery burial records were either destroyed or altered by the cemetery manager/ring leader.

This is perhaps the lowest level that a human being can sink. Taking advantage of the final resting place of another human being certainly does earn them, as Jesse Jackson said, a “special place in Hell.” This is probably the one and only time that I agree with Rev. Jackson.

I hope that law enforcement in Chicago literally throws the book at these four sub-humans. They not only have broken the law of the land, they have sinned a great sin in God’s eyes. The families of those whose bodies were desecrated and discarded should expect that justice will be done, and that these four will pay for their crime dearly.

A: When it is hastily crafted and it contains more provisions to placate organizations who Obama and the Democrats owe political fealty to like unions and ACORN, rather than to serve as actual jobs creation legislation.

Oh yeah, did I mention that nary a single Democrat who voted for this turkey legislation actually read the (at the time) bill before they voted for it.

Well, we’re now witnessing first-hand that the so-called “Stimulus” legislation is not creating jobs as it was originally advertised. In fact, the Obama administration, starting at the top, is now backpedaling on this deficit-busting measure. That’s right, “Honest” Joe Biden recently let slip, as most Americans had suspected, that the Obama administration screwed up big time with regards to the stimulus. The following is an excerpt from an interview that Biden gave to George Stephanopoulos while Biden was on a recent junket to Iraq:

“The truth is, we and everyone else misread the economy.

“The truth is, there was a misreading of just how bad an economy we inherited. Now, that doesn’t — I’m not — it’s now our responsibility. So the second question becomes, did the economic package we put in place, including the Recovery Act, is it the right package given the circumstances we’re in? And we believe it is the right package given the circumstances we’re in. We misread how bad the economy was, but we are now only about 120 days into the recovery package. The truth of the matter was, no one anticipated, no one expected that that recovery package would in fact be in a position at this point of having to distribute the bulk of money.”

“So, no second stimulus?” asked Stephanopoulos.

“No, I didn’t say that,” Biden said. “I think it’s premature to make that judgment. This was set up to spend out over 18 months. There are going to be major programs that are going to take effect in September, $7.5 billion for broadband, new money for high-speed rail, the implementation of the grid — the new electric grid. And so this is just starting, the pace of the ball is now going to increase.”

Please note that what Biden said in Iraq was a candid admission that the administration didn’t have a clue just how bad a state that the economy was in when it pushed the $787 billion stimulus legislation…and then ramrodded it through the hapless Congress.

Now, what Biden said is a tacit admission of ineptitude…but the hubris-soaked Barak Obama cannot stand to make an admission of error or be seen as making a mistake. So, after Biden’s candid admission…the President went out on interviews to do some damage control:

“I would actually — rather than say misread, we had incomplete information,” President Obama told NBC News’ Chuck Todd. “What we always knew was that a) this recession was gonna be deep, and b) it was gonna last for a while.”

“There’s nothing that we would have done differently,” Obama said in an interview with ABC News. “We needed a stimulus and we needed a substantial stimulus.”

Responding to critics concerned about the mounting defecit with little results to show for it, Obama said there were “legitimate concerns. In the midterm and long term we’re going to have to get control of that. The question that some have argued is, ‘Okay, what next? Maybe you stop the freefall but you still have close to 10% unemployment,’ And you know, this is something that we wrestle with constantly … [W]e inherited a big deficit, and it is at a certain point potentially counterproductive if we’re spending more money than we’re having to borrow.”

It should be noted that both Obama and Biden are still using the red herring of “inherited economy” to bolster their case that they did not fail. Nice try at misdirection (and a craven rekindling of Bush Derangement Syndrome), but we’re trillions of dollars deeper in debt due to the actions of THIS administration…with several new economy-busting pieces of legislation currently under consideration in the Congress. And we’re still showing no signs that the “stimulus” is putting people to work and helping our economy to recover.

It’s time for the administration to admit their failure…and to just declare this to the citizens of the US. Obama and the Congressional Democrats need to fess up and admit that their “stimulus” was an attempt to pump tribute to their supporters under the guise of economic recovery and jobs creation, but it achieved feckless and flaccid results.

We (not Obama and the Congress)…we spent a lot of money on this craven attempt at political boosterism. And our return on our investment thus far has been ineffectual. We don’t have any of our elected representatives stepping forward to take the blame in the same manner that they did for passing this insane legislation. Shouldn’t we expect an adult leading us who understands where the buck stops?

Aren’t we at least owed the truth?

Over this past holiday weekend I traveled around parts of Massachusetts and New Hampshire, and I noticed an ever-increasing number of roadsigns like that shown above.

This is pure self-aggrandizement on the part of the Obama administration. If the truth were told, the projects in question were funded by pulling our pockets inside out — as well as those of our progeny — without our consent to obtain political capital and points for the Democrats and for Obama. What we’re seeing is pure political credit grabbing and grandstanding.

Now, considering that each of these signs can cost up to $1,500 to fabricate and erect, the money that went to create this political propaganda would be put to better use if it were spent on the actual projects.

I think if these projects were for the benefit of American citizens, as they are advertised to be, then there would be no need for signs to announce where the funding came from. Regardless of the project, the funding comes from US! Not from Obama…not from the vote whore Democrats in the Congress…from US. If these projects were intended to benefit the average American citizen then they would be done with little fanfare and on time and on or under budget to boot.

So the next time you see one of those unnecessary and costly road signs announcing where the source of the funding of the public works project at hand came from, reject the craven political gainsay and pat yourself vigorously on the back. You’re paying for every shovelful of dirt and every mile of asphalt.

Credit should be given where credit is actually due!
